Trans Outeniqua 5 day MTB Tour

The Trans Outeniqua MTB tour, a Scenic Mountain bike tour in the beautiful Garden Route of South Africa, will start at Pine Creek River Resort in Great-Brak River and will take you over 3 mountain ranges, the Langeberg Mountains, the Rooi Berge and the Outeniqua Mountains.

The Garden Route (Afrikaans: Tuinroete) is a stretch of the south-eastern coast of South Africa which extends from Mossel Bay in the Western Cape to the Storms River in the Eastern Cape. The name comes from the verdant and ecologically diverse vegetation encountered here and the numerous lagoons and lakes dotted along the coast. It includes towns such as Knysna, Plettenberg Bay and Nature’s Valley; with George, the Garden Route’s largest city and main administrative centre.

It has an oceanic climate, with mild to warm summers, and mild to cool winters. It has the mildest climate in South Africa and the second mildest climate in the world, after Hawaii, according to the Guinness Book of Records. Temperatures rarely fall below 10°C in winter and rarely climb beyond 28°C in summer. Rain occurs year-round, with a slight peak in the spring months, brought by the humid sea-winds from the Indian Ocean rising and releasing their precipitation along the Outeniqua and Tsitsikamma Mountains just inland of the coast.

The Route is sandwiched between the aforementioned mountains and the Indian Ocean. The Outeniqua and Tsitsikamma indigenous forests are a unique mixture of Cape Fynbos and Temperate Forest and offer hiking trails and eco-tourism activities. Nearly 300 species of bird life are to be found in a variety of habitats ranging from fynbos to forest to wetlands.

It is circular route of 5 days of exhilarating riding along and over the mountains. This is great long distance training for the Epic, but doable for the intermediate to fit Mountain biker. No technical riding. Stay at 3 to 4 star accommodation.

Dwarsrivier Country Guesthouse has comfortable chalets overlooking the valley and a special treat is its own pub where you can enjoy a well deserved beer or cold drink and enjoy supper alongside the burning fire.

DAY 2 : HERBERTSDALE TO VAN WYKSDORP 75km

A 75km MTB ride from Herbertsdale to the 4-star Rooiberg Lodge in Van Wyksdorp awaits you after breakfast and  your departure from Dwarsrivier Country Getaway.

If you are lucky you might see some wildlife while cycling towards the lodge.  You can also opt for a game drive at sunset.

DAY 3 : VAN WYKSDORP TO OUTSTHOORN 76km

A 76km MTB ride from Van Wyksdorp to De Zeekoe Guesthouse in Oudtshoorn.  Day 3 will most definately test your endurance for climbing, but do keep in mind what goes up, must come down. Just switch to granny gear and you will get there. You will cross the Rooiberge and experience the beautiful views of the Swartberge in the distance.  Once you get to the 4-star De Zeekoe Guesthouse, you will be able to cool down in the swimming pool or relax in your chalet/ room. The staff at De Zeekoe will spoil you with a refreshing drink while you relax, thereafter you will enjoy a delicious hearty dinner.

DAY 4 : OUDSTHOORN TO HEROLD 60km

A 60km MTB ride from Oudtshoorn to Herold awaits you.  But first there is an early morning rise to experience the sunrise in the veld with the Meerkat guide, waiting for them to wake up and come out of their holes.  You will be able to experience the Meerkats’ behaviour first hand and only a few metres away from them.  At about 08:00 you will be able to enjoy a De Zeekoe breakfast, ready to leave by 09:00.

The next overnight stop will be at Hildesheim Guesthouse or Herold Wine Farm Cottages (group depended) in Herold, a small little town in the Outeniqua mountains.

Thereafter enjoy the beautiful scenery of the sea and the mountains while we descend the famous old Montagu Pass.  This will definitely be the most exhilarating and fun downhill you will have on the route – going down Montagu Pass you will have the chance to break your own speed records (if you like). We will then cycle along the “forest highway” which is a beautiful jeep track that runs along the Outeniqua Mountains towards Jonkersberg Forest station.   From there we will start to descent towards the Peperboom Restaurant.
